Farms of the Rostov region started sowing peas

The farms of the Rostov region have started the spring sowing campaign, said Nikolai Zelensky, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor at the Don State Agrarian University.

"The sowing campaign has already begun, and farms in the east and south of the region have started sowing peas. It is not afraid of small frosts and is a moisture-resistant crop, so if you have the right tools, seeders that work well in moist soil, then you can sow now. It will be much worse on dry soil," he said.

According to the scientist, the sowing of the main spring crops, including wheat and corn, will be carried out in March.
"They will be sown as soon as it is possible to enter the field. Small—seeded crops such as rapeseed, mustard, flax can be sown earlier, in moist soil, especially since there are technologies that allow you to sow with a sprayer. Sunflower, on the other hand, is a medium—term crop, and warmer weather is needed here, since the temperature at the seed depth should be at least 5-6 degrees," he says.

According to Nikolai Zelinsky, early spring is expected in the region, and it will be quite warm and dry in March."In this situation, for spring sowing, I would prefer drought—resistant crops — millet, sorghum, corn," he says.Soil moisture reserves in the Rostov region are several times behind the climatic norm. At the end of January 2025, the volume of moisture in a meter-long soil layer ranged from 60 to 90 mm, whereas, on average, this figure should reach 150-180 mm.
